Sustainable life means that you consciously think about the things you do and the energy you use, as well as the choices you make every day towards a simple and eco-friendly life. If you’re new to this, don’t worry. You’re probably practicing sustainability without realizing it. Applying these tips in your daily life will save and reduce your environmental footprint – not to mention your bank account will thank you for it! They may seem insignificant, but remember, your actions count and can make a difference!
Step 1, Say no to fast fashion:
Did you know that fashion is the third most-polluting industry for the environment? The use of water, chemical pollution, CO2 emissions and textile waste destroy our ecosystems every day. Instead, buy from sustainable fashion brands.
Step 2, Buy organic:
Why buy organic? What difference does it really make? If you decide to buy organic, you are reducing your exposure to chemicals and pesticides, but also, you are reducing the amount of chemical run-off polluting the surrounding waterways and farmland. Not just that, you are doing your body a favour – eating organic is eating healthier and cleaner.
Step 3, Go local:
This is a massive step to having a more sustainable lifestyle, but it often gets overlooked. First, you are supporting small businesses over shopping from big brand labels – real people with real dreams and passion. Second, you are decreasing the environmental impact of all those products that travel more than 1500 miles to reach your location!
Step 4, Practice minimalism:
Less is more. Do you really need that trendy dress you’re probably won’t wear next year? Does this shirt fit your style, or are you buying it just because it looks cute? Will you wear this at least 30 times? If the answer is no, don’t buy. If you think something won’t make it through the wash and wear of 30 times, pass on it and buy something of a higher quality.
Step 5, Rethink your cleaning products:
Common commercial cleaners are loaded with toxic and polluting substances. Switch to non-toxic, biodegradable and reduced-chemical cleaning products, and you will help clean up your environmental act. You can also make your own cleaning products at home.
Step 6, Recycle and dispose properly:
It’s very challenging to lead a plastic-free life – but not impossible. Remember to say ‘no bag please’ in shops, and ‘no straws please’ in bars and restaurants because all of those finish in our oceans and harm our wildlife. You can carry a cloth bag instead, that will not pollute the environment and you can reuse it. Believe it or not, recycling the wrong materials can actually cause harm to the environment. Step 7, Go car-free:
Walk or ride a bike to your destination instead of driving if it’s close enough – it’s better for the environment and your health (perfect if you’re running a busy lifestyle and don’t have enough time to exercise). Using public transport is another good way to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Step 8, Save energy:
Most of electronic devices keep on drawing electricity even when they’re turned off. To reduce energy usage, simply pull the plug when not in use. It will help you to save energy and reduce your monthly electricity bill.
Step 9, Reduce food waste:
Food thrown into your garbage bin ends up in a landfill, and breaks down in a way that can create greenhouse gasses. Remember, waste isn’t waste, until you waste it!
Step 10, Go paper-free:
Replace paper napkins, towels with cloth napkins/towels. You can also switch to a digital organizer for tracking to-dos and grocery lists. Another idea is to print documents on once-used paper, on both sides, or on bleach-free recycled paper.
